Abstract

In the existing economic literature, there have been contrasting views on what effect international trade has on unemployment. This paper seeks to answer the research question on what impact international trade has on unemployment by finding out the individual effects of exports, imports and net exports on unemployment. The results find significant negative effects for all variables although only the results of net exports are unbiased. This implies the U.S. having higher imports than imports decrease unemployment in the economy.
