Abstract
This American coming-of-age novella follows a half-Indian girl through childhood as she grapples with the pains of growing up in a predominantly white city, all the while using painting as a means of understanding and illustrating exile.
"Marie Lakshmi" examines the detrimental effects of loneliness and abandonment of culture on the individual. It takes place in the 1970s in Schenectady, NY and the 60s in Calcutta, India.
